Ska-Kestra

Brighton Festival Fringe

Opening night of the Brighton Festival Fringe!

With Mark Bassey and Simon D'Souza

Back with a big bang comes the SKA-KESTRA, the 20+piece big band extravaganza built around Brighton's own Ska Toons. Mixing up classic ska, jazz and funk with dynamic arrangements, the Ska-Kestra returns to the Old Market after last year's skankingly successful gig.

This year the Ska-Kestra kicks off the first night of the Festival. It features top jazz soloists Mark Bassey trombone and Simon D'Souza tenor, both highly-rated bandleaders in their own right, and stars of last year's Ska-Kestra outing.

The line-up boasts five trumpets, four trombones, five saxes, two guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and vocals from Ska Toons' own Helen Nicholls.

Celebrity Piano Recital

J S BACH Partita No.6 in e
J S BACH / BUSONI Chaconne in d
CHOPIN Sonata Op.35 No.2 in bb
RACHMANINOV Sonata Op.36 No.2 in bb

Freddy Kempf, winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and Best Young British Classical Performer in the Classical Brit Awards, took up the piano at the age of four and aged 8, caught the attention of British concertgoers when he played a Mozart Piano Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall.

Kempf performs solo, chamber, and concert music in Europe, the Americas, East Asia and Australia, and has recorded recital discs of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, and Schumann.

'The meteoric success of pianist Freddy Kempf makes it easy to forget he is in his
mid-20s. If it is true that an artist’s finest years come with age, then the mind boggles at the possibilities.'
