REGENCY SOCIETY LECTURE

Georgian and Regency Musical evening with readings.

Come and sample the sound of local music written for playing in Brighton and compare it with some of the other music which the dancers to the Brighthelmstone Baths Gallop and other delights would have also heard. Some readings from local authors will also be part of this for there was a considerable amount of poetry and several novels published in Brighton and in Sussex. Some of the music is played with the consent of the Sussex Archaeological Society who kindly gave access to their copies of it.

Doors 7pm/Performance from 8pm

GENO WASHINGTON
and The Ram Jam Band
Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band is something of a soul phenomenon. Without ever having had a number one single, Geno had two of the biggest selling U.K. albums of the sixties. Amazingly both of these were live albums. ‘Hand Clappin’ Foot Stompin’ Funky Butt Live’, for example, was in the U.K. album charts for 48 out of 52 weeks in 1966. Incredibly, only ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ sold more copies in the UK that year…A fact that is a clear testament to Geno’s awesome ability as a live performer. He is electric on stage and his love of life makes him an inspiration and a joy to witness.

‘The forceful pace matches Washington’s powerful vocal style. He ad-libs, nothing is sacred and the crowd urges him on, ecstatic. This is one man who knows how to keep his mojo working’.

SOULED OUT

Brighton’s First Soul Choir

As the legendary Marvin Gaye put it “What’s Going On?” Well that’s an easy one to answer; Brighton’s first soul choir will be performing for the first time at a spectacular night of live soul and very special DJs.

Born from a tiny seed of thought ("I wonder if Brighton is ready for a Soul Choir"?) Neil Masey's talented group is the fastest growing choir in town, having amassed 80 members in just a few weeks. Boy is Brighton ready!!

Directed by David Lavale (igospel.uk) and accompanied by a funky live band, the night includes songs from artists such as Stevie Wonder and the legendary Michael Jackson. And that's not all! A collective of talented DJs from the Go Bang!!! stable will top the evening with a set of fine soul and soulful disco tunes

A soulful start to the festive season.

WILL SELF & RALPH STEADMAN

Provocateurs Will Self and Ralph Steadman join forces in this post millennial meditation on the vexed relationship between psyche and place in a globalised world to present their new book 'Psycho Too'- bringing together for the first time the very best of their 'Psychogeography' columns for the Independent. The introduction, 'Walking to New York', is both a prelude to the verbal and visual essays that make up this extraordinary collaboration, and a revealing exploration of the split in Self's Jewish American British psyche and its relationship to the political geography of the post 9/11 world. Ranging from the Scottish Highlands to Istanbul and from Morocco to Ohio, Will Self's engaging and disturbing vision is perfectly counter pointed by Ralph Steadman's edgy and beautiful artwork.

'Brilliantly original, Will Self is one of those rare writers whose imaginations change for ever the way we see the world'  JG Ballard

'Steadman has always been one of my heroes.'  Raymond Briggs

Founded by its Musical Director, Kirsty Martin, Hullabaloo Community Quire has grown in ten years from 6 to over 100 singers and now performs in major venues throughout England

Spelled ‘Quire’ rather than Choir in order to separate itself from the traditional notions regarding ‘church’ or ‘classical’ choirs, Hullabaloo has been praised as: ‘the aural equivalent of finding a fifty quid note in the street’ and prides itself on its wide repertoire: from arrangements of songs by David Bowie, Kaiser Chiefs, Kate Bush, Indigo Girls, Fairport Convention, The Jackson Five to the eclectic selection for this concert.

Singing a capella, the choir also performs songs from all over the world as well as busking for good causes during breaks in working towards their major gigs.

A not-for-profit organisation, self-funded, and run by a management committee of volunteers Hullabaloo undoubtedly reflects the inclusive nature of the wider Brighton society and includes in its membership teenagers and octogenarians whose aim is to offer a wealth of creative energy, camaraderie, therapy, hilarity, and musical entertainment to those who hear it perform.
